Islamabad: An alleged religious conversion involving an underage Sikh girl in Pakistan has drawn attention following the circulation of a viral video. The girl says in the footage that she chose to embrace Islam of her own free will and has no regrets about her decision. Her account has prompted renewed discussion about religious conversions and the safety of minority communities in Pakistan.
In the video, the girl claims that she had been interested in learning about Islam for some time. She says she felt that something was missing from her life without performing namaz (prayers) and observing roza (fasting).
According to her account, she met a man named Saqib, who introduced her to Islam and explained its teachings. She says the interaction led her to believe that she could find spiritual fulfilment by following the religion.
The girl further claims that Saqib helped her recite the Kalma, after which she experienced what she describes as a profound spiritual moment. She says she felt that she had finally found her Lord.
Speaking about her first experience of Ramadan, she expresses happiness and says that observing Islamic customs and practices has brought her a sense of peace. She reiterates that she does not regret her decision to convert.
Sikh Community Raises Concerns
The incident has prompted concern among some members of the Sikh community and social media users, who have raised questions about what they describe as a ‘Kaur to Khan’ campaign. They allege that Sikh girls are being targeted for religious conversion, although the claims have not been independently established in this case.
Simranpreet Kaur, who has spoken out on issues affecting the Sikh community, expressed concern over reports alleging that Sikh girls in Pakistan have embraced Islam under pressure. She questioned what measures Pakistani authorities were taking to protect Sikh girls and safeguard their rights.
Navdeep Singh and other members of the community have also described such reports as a serious concern, calling attention to the need for the safety and protection of religious minorities.
Allegations of Pressure and Inducements
The report also refers to allegations involving the conversion of underage Sikh girls in Pakistan. In some cases, claims have been made that girls were pressured or persuaded to change their religion against their wishes. Certain groups have additionally been accused of offering payments of up to £10,000 in connection with religious conversions.
These allegations remain matters of concern and require independent verification. No confirmed evidence establishing coercion in the specific case featured in the video has been provided.
The incident continues to fuel debate within the Sikh community about religious freedom, the protection of minors and the responsibilities of Pakistani authorities in addressing allegations of forced conversion.
