London’s chimney sweeping industry is experiencing an unlikely resurgence as households turn to traditional heating methods amid rising energy costs and concerns over electricity supply security, according to a report by The New York Times.
The profession, which had declined sharply after central heating became widespread and clean air regulations took effect in the second half of the 20th century, is now witnessing renewed demand. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps reports that membership has grown to approximately 750 today, up from about 590 in 2021.
Association president Martin Glynn told The New York Times that the increase reflects growing interest in backup heating options. He explained that households are seeking alternatives in case electricity supplies fail, particularly given geopolitical tensions and warnings about potential attacks on power infrastructure by hostile states like Russia. “People are thinking, ‘Let’s have a backup, let’s have a fire, let’s have a stove in case the electricity goes off,'” Glynn told NYT, noting that those with the ability to burn logs or smokeless fuel can maintain cooking and heating capabilities during outages.
Family businesses that survived the industry’s long decline are reporting strong demand. Josh Firkins, whose family has been sweeping chimneys since 1860, told NYT that his company receives 70 to 80 calls daily during winter months. He attributed the surge to rising living costs, saying that the busiest periods coincide with recessions and high energy prices. While fires are less efficient than modern systems, Firkins said they help households ration central heating use, and those with access to free or cheap wood can achieve cost savings.
The profession has been modernised significantly. Glynn described today’s sweeps to NYT as chimney technicians using CCTV cameras and smoke testing equipment, a far cry from the dangerous practice of sending children up chimneys that was outlawed in 1875.
However, the revival has drawn environmental concerns. Scientists and campaigners warn that fires and stoves produce PM2.5, a harmful pollutant associated with respiratory problems, heart disease, and dementia.
