As tensions continue amid the Iran conflict, India’s decision to provide fuel assistance to Sri Lanka carries notable strategic weight. The move strengthens regional stability, supports energy security, and enhances India’s influence. It also reflects a broader approach of sustaining supply chains during the Middle East crisis while extending support to neighbouring countries.

International Desk: The growing conflict between Iran and the United States has significantly disrupted oil supplies and shipping routes across the Middle East. Against this backdrop, India has made a major strategic intervention by dispatching 38,000 tonnes of petroleum to economically strained Sri Lanka. The assistance is being regarded as both humanitarian and strategically important.

Heightened tensions around crucial maritime passages such as the Strait of Hormuz have threatened global oil flows, with smaller nations facing the greatest challenges. India’s action is in line with its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, which prioritises assistance to neighbouring countries in times of crisis.

Sri Lankan MP Namal Rajapaksa thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India for their support, noting that India has consistently stood by Sri Lanka during difficult periods. He said the move reflects India’s strong regional policy and will help deepen bilateral ties, while also highlighting the need for greater regional cooperation.

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa also expressed appreciation, remarking that genuine partnerships are proven in times of hardship. Rajapaksa further suggested that Sri Lanka could take cues from India’s fuel tax model to ease the burden on citizens and improve the country’s economic outlook.
