CHANDIGARH/AMRITSAR: Punjab Police have busted two alleged cross-border weapons and narcotics smuggling modules in separate operations in Amritsar, arresting six people and recovering 2.9 kg of heroin, eight high-end pistols and six live cartridges, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Friday.
The arrested have been identified as Inderpal Singh and Sikandarjit Singh of Bhindi Aulakh, Happy Singh alias Veerpal Singh of Kakkar, Sunil Masih and Rajan Masih of Mahal in Gurdaspur, and Pardeep Singh of Noorpur in Amritsar.
Police also seized a Hyundai Venue car and a Splendor motorcycle allegedly being used for smuggling activities.
According to DGP Yadav, preliminary investigations indicate that the accused were allegedly involved in cross-border smuggling and receiving consignments of weapons and narcotics through drones, which were subsequently intended for distribution among criminal elements in Punjab.
In the first operation, Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar teams acted on intelligence that Sunil and Rajan had allegedly received a consignment of illegal pistols and were expected to deliver them to associate Pardeep Singh near Nurpur. Police intercepted the three suspects and recovered seven pistols, AIG Sukhminder Singh Mann said.
In a separate operation, the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Amritsar arrested Inderpal, Sikandarjit and Happy Singh and recovered 2.9 kg heroin and one pistol from their possession.
AIG Mann said investigations were continuing to uncover the full extent of the alleged cross-border network, adding that further arrests and recoveries were expected in the coming days.
Two separate FIRs have been registered at Police Station SSOC Amritsar under relevant provisions of the Arms Act, NDPS Act, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam.
