New Delhi (PTI): As police chased and dispersed protesters across central Delhi, the gates of Gurdwara Bangla Sahib opened to hundreds of youths seeking refuge after they were subjected to baton charge, tear gas and chaos during the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march.

A large crowd gathered outside the gurdwara on Monday evening as protesters, who participated in the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) Parliament march, sought shelter inside.

A video doing the rounds on social media showed sewadars standing at the entrance as the crowd gathered before the gates were closed.

Some of those who entered the gurdwara slept in its common area, after exhausting hours on the streets.

“Everyone is welcome here. The common area and langar are open to everybody,” Paramjit Singh Chandhok, Chief Advisor to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, said on Tuesday.

Chandhok said the gurdwara did not turn away people seeking shelter and that its doors remained open to anyone who needed a place to rest or eat.

The gurdwara’s common area, he said, was available to the protesters who had gathered there after being dispersed from the streets, while the langar continued to serve food to all those who came.
However, he added that no formal application had been submitted to the gurdwara by any individual or group seeking shelter.

“We do not ask anyone who comes here for help where they are from or what they believe in. If someone needs food or a place to sit, the gurdwara is open to them,” he said.

The gurdwara’s doors offered a stark contrast to the streets outside, where thousands of protesters had attempted to march towards Parliament despite prohibitory orders in force in the New Delhi district. Heavy deployment of Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel was seen across Connaught Place, with additional reinforcements rushed in as protesters regrouped at different points after being dispersed. Roads around the commercial hub witnessed severe traffic snarls as police erected barricades and diverted vehicles to prevent protesters from moving towards Parliament and other high-security installations.

The violence in Connaught Place came as CJP supporters attempted to move towards Parliament as part of their campaign demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over irregularities and paper leaks in major competitive examinations, including NEET and JEE.
