India: Delhi University to Mark Librarian’s Day with National Conference on LIS Education

New Delhi: The Department of Library & Information Science (DLIS), University of Delhi, in association with the Delhi Library Association (DLA), will celebrate Librarian’s Day on August 12, 2026, commemorating the birth anniversary of Rai Saheb Dr. S. R. Ranganathan (1892–1972), regarded as the Father of Library Science in India.

The occasion will also feature the inaugural ceremony of the National Conference on “LIS Education in Alignment with NEP 2020” and the inauguration of the renovated Seminar and Lecture Hall at the Department of Library and Information Science, Tagore Hall, University of Delhi. The programme is scheduled for 11 am on Wednesday, August 12.

According to the invitation issued by Professor K. P. Singh, Head of the Department of Library & Information Science, Director, Gandhi Bhawan, Provost, PG Men’s Hostel, DU, and President, Delhi Library Association, the celebration will honour Dr. Ranganathan’s enduring contribution to library science and education.

His Excellency Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla, Governor of Telangana, will be the Chief Guest, while Swami Rameshwarananda Ji, Spiritual Guru and Chief, Nirmal Ashram, Ajmer, will attend as the Distinguished Guest.

The programme will be presided over by Prof. Balaram Pani, Dean of Colleges, University of Delhi. Prof. Payal Mago, Director, Campus of Open Learning, University of Delhi, and Dr. Ajay Shankar Pandey, former Commissioner, Jhansi, IAS (Retd.), are listed as Guests of Honour.

The event carries the theme “Empowering Knowledge — Enriching Society”, reflecting the continuing role of library and information science in education and knowledge development.
