New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal on Tuesday assumed office as the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), signalling a renewed focus on the welfare, empowerment and socio-economic development of minority communities across India.
Grewal was welcomed at the Commission headquarters by Joint Secretary Dr. Atya Nand and senior officials as he formally took charge. His appointment is expected to strengthen the Commission’s efforts to promote justice, equality, social inclusion and equitable opportunities for minority communities.
A seasoned political leader, Grewal previously served as the State Vice President of the BJP’s Punjab unit and has extensive experience in public life and organisational leadership. He has been associated with initiatives aimed at fostering social harmony, public welfare and inclusive development. During the farmer protests, he played a key role in facilitating dialogue by acting as a bridge between the Central Government and protesting farmer unions.
The Commission has also been strengthened with S. Munawari Begum assuming office as the Vice Chairperson. A former Vice President of the BJP Minority Morcha and former Vice-Chairperson of the Haj Committee of India, she is expected to contribute significantly to advancing minority rights and promoting equal opportunities.
Further expanding its representative character, Glenn Souza Ticlo has joined the Commission as the Member representing the Christian community. A former two-term MLA from Goa’s Aldona constituency, Ticlo brings considerable legislative and public service experience.
The Commission also includes Berjis Desai, who joined earlier this year as the Member representing the Parsi community. A distinguished High Court advocate and noted writer, Desai adds legal expertise and public policy experience to the Commission.
With its new leadership team in place, the National Commission for Minorities is set to intensify its efforts towards safeguarding minority rights, strengthening inclusive governance and advancing the nation’s agenda of justice, empowerment and balanced socio-economic development.
