New Delhi, 9 September 2026: Growing curiosity among India’s Gen Z to understand democracy, the Constitution and legislative processes first-hand is emerging as a strong bridge between young citizens and democratic institutions, Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Shri Vijender Gupta said during an interaction with students of Aurobindo College, University of Delhi.

Under the Youth Outreach Programme, students visited the historic Delhi Legislative Assembly and explored its rich democratic legacy, institutional heritage and legislative functioning. The visit provided students an opportunity to move beyond textbooks and digital platforms and experience the working environment of a legislative institution.

The students also met Speaker Vijender Gupta and held an engaging discussion on democracy, constitutional values, the role of the legislature and the importance of youth participation in nation-building. They enthusiastically raised questions about the functioning of the House and legislative deliberations.

Gupta said the growing interest of young people in democratic institutions was “highly encouraging”, describing Gen Z as an aware, inquisitive and energetic generation with an important role in strengthening India’s democracy.

He emphasised that democracy should not be viewed merely as a political system, but as a living institution based on dialogue, deliberation, consensus, dissent and constitutional propriety. According to him, direct exposure to the Assembly helps students understand how elected representatives deliberate on public issues and advance matters of public interest through democratic processes.

During the guided tour, students learnt about the historic Delhi Assembly complex, including its architectural and institutional heritage and its association with the Central Legislative Assembly. Documentaries presented to the students highlighted significant personalities and events linked to the building’s legacy.

The students were also introduced to the Assembly’s commemorative coffee-table book, “Ek Shatabdi Yatra”, documenting its historic journey and rich legacy. The programme concluded with a walkthrough of the main Assembly Chamber, giving the students a first-hand glimpse of the setting where legislative debates and proceedings are conducted.

Calling upon the students to become informed and responsible citizens, Gupta stressed that young people must understand not only their constitutional rights but also their civic and constitutional duties.

He said today’s students would become tomorrow’s policymakers, public representatives, administrators, teachers, scientists and social leaders, making it essential to connect the younger generation with democratic institutions and constitutional values to build a bright and progressive India.
