The loss of lives and properties could increase in the coming time as the country grapples with heavy rainfall in several provinces.

Seventeen people died, and 11 were injured in several parts of Afghanistan following flash floods and snowfall in the last few days, news agency Associated Press reported.

The disaster has not only resulted in loss of lives but also destroyed properties across the nation. Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, the spokesperson for the country’s Disaster Management Authority, told local publication Tolo News that a total of 274 houses were destroyed, and more than 1,550 houses were partially damaged in the disaster.

The loss of lives and property could increase in the coming time as the country grapples with heavy rainfall in several provinces.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recently pointed out Afghanistan’s vulnerability to natural calamities like earthquakes, thunderstorms, landslides, seasonal floods, snowfall and others. The body highlighted that repeated tremors have made the lives of the communities, who have already gone through a fatal civil war, more difficult.

The present crisis in Afghanistan points fingers at the mismanagement on a larger scale and infrastructural instability in the country. Economic experts in the country raised concerns that the recent floods would not only take lives, but also put economic pressure on people.

Qutubuddin Yaqubi, an economic analyst, who was quoted by Tolo News, mentioned that the lack of effective planning and infrastructural support has made the situation worse for the people of Afghanistan.

Along with the natural calamities, the country’s humanitarian crisis has also been intensified due to the mass deportation of Afghan asylum seekers from Pakistan and Iran, said the Norwegian Refugee Council, as reported by news agency ANI. It also cited that prolonged drought conditions and earthquakes in northern and eastern regions also made it difficult for the people.
