Geneva | Special Correspondent

A civil society group has called on the international community to intensify its fight against terrorism and ensure accountability for attacks on civilians, during a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Addressing the Council’s 61st session, Mr. Yasser Laaroussi, speaking on behalf of the ECO FAWN Society, delivered a powerful statement during the General Debate under Item 3. He drew attention to the devastating terrorist attack that struck Pahalgam on April 22, 2025.

Speaking in French, Laaroussi paid tribute to the victims of the attack in the scenic Baisaran Valley, describing the assault as a “cold-blooded attack against humanity itself.” He stressed that the deliberate targeting of civilians represents a grave violation of international human rights law and humanitarian principles.

The attack claimed 26 lives, including local pony handler Syed Adil Hussain Shah, who reportedly tried to shield tourists from harm, and a foreign national from Nepal.

“Terrorism in all its forms is a direct assault on the fundamental rights to life, liberty and personal security,” Laaroussi told the Council. “No political, ideological or strategic pretext can ever justify violence against innocent civilians.”

He warned that cross-border support or tolerance of militant groups can escalate threats to global peace and national sovereignty.

Calling for stronger international cooperation, Laaroussi urged UN member states to ensure that those responsible for terrorist violence do not escape justice, and to take firm action against individuals or networks that harbor, finance or facilitate extremist groups.

The intervention reaffirmed the ECO FAWN Society’s commitment to defending human rights and standing with victims of terrorism. The organization concluded by urging the global community to pair remembrance with decisive action—so that justice, peace and human dignity ultimately prevail over violence and extremism.
