New Delhi: Delhi reaffirmed its growing reputation as a global sporting destination on Monday with the grand inauguration of the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2026 at the iconic Thyagraj Stadium.
The week-long championship, running from July 27 to August 2, has brought together elite paddlers, officials and delegates from 25 Commonwealth nations, making it one of the biggest international table tennis events on the Commonwealth sporting calendar.
Hosted by the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in partnership with the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation (CWTTF), the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and the Delhi State Table Tennis Association (DSTTA), the tournament is expected to showcase world-class competition while fostering international friendship and cultural exchange.
The opening ceremony blended sporting tradition with India’s rich cultural heritage. A vibrant cultural showcase celebrating the country’s diversity was followed by the Parade of Nations, the Athletes’ Oath and the formal declaration of the championships open. Senior government officials, representatives of participating countries and office-bearers of international and national table tennis bodies attended the ceremony.
The Delhi Government reiterated its commitment to promoting sporting excellence, youth development and stronger international sporting partnerships, noting that hosting the championship further enhances the capital’s sporting infrastructure and strengthens India’s position as a preferred venue for major global sporting events.
The championship is expected to witness intense competition over the coming week as some of the Commonwealth’s finest table tennis players vie for top honours, while also highlighting Delhi’s capability to successfully stage international sporting events of the highest standards.
