Pankaj Nath, Assam: National Fish Farmers Day was celebrated on Friday at Guwahati Biotech Park, Amingaon in Kamrup, Assam . The programme was organised by the Business Incubation Centre for Fisheries and Aquaculture under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kamrup. Observed every year on 10 July, National Fish Farmers Day commemorates the landmark achievement of Indian scientists Dr. Hiralal Chaudhuri and Dr. K. H. Alikunhi, who successfully demonstrated induced breeding of Indian major carps in 1957. The day honours the contribution of fish farmers to strengthening food security, enhancing nutritional well-being, generating rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable aquaculture across the country. The programme was attended by DC Kamrup Deba Kumar Mishra, along with fish farmers, entrepreneurs, researchers, scientists, officials and stakeholders from the fisheries sector to celebrate the occasion and discuss the latest developments, innovations and opportunities in aquaculture.
