Two teenagers believed to be of Punjabi origin were killed in a suspected targeted gang-related shooting in Surrey, Canada, highlighting ongoing concerns over escalating gang violence in British Columbia.
According to the Surrey Police Service, the incident occurred at approximately 10 pm on May 10 in an underground parking facility near the 7000 block of 133B Street, close to 70 Avenue in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood, an area with a significant Punjabi community.
Police officers responded after receiving multiple reports of gunfire and discovered two young males suffering from critical gunshot injuries. Despite immediate medical assistance provided by first responders and paramedics, both victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
Authorities have not officially released the identities of the deceased. However, local community sources indicated that the victims were aged 16 and 18 and were from Punjabi families residing in Surrey.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which is leading the investigation, stated that preliminary evidence suggests the shooting was targeted and linked to the ongoing gang conflict in British Columbia. Investigators also noted that the victims were allegedly associated with organised criminal networks.
In a related development, police recovered a burnt grey sedan near Enver Creek School, located near 144 Street and 84 Avenue, shortly after the shooting. According to reports, investigators believe the vehicle may be connected to the attack.
IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong described the incident as a tragic loss, noting that two families are grieving the deaths of “young lives lost far too early.”
Investigators have urged residents and motorists in the area to provide any relevant information, including dashcam footage recorded between 9 pm and 11 pm on the night of the incident.
Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke also expressed concern over the rise in violent crime and called for stronger anti-gang measures to address the worsening situation.
No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation remains ongoing.
