The post had fallen vacant following the demise of Khaleda Zia, who served as both BNP chairperson and Bangladesh’s prime minister.
Tarique Rahman on Friday formally assumed office as Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) following the Standing Committee’s approval of his appointment, days after the death of former Prime Minister and party chief Begum Khaleda Zia.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed the decision, saying it was taken at a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee held at the BNP’s Gulshan office.
The committee unanimously resolved to entrust Rahman with the responsibility of party chairman. The post had fallen vacant following the demise of Khaleda Zia, who served as both BNP chairperson and Bangladesh’s prime minister.
