Tributes Paid to the Brave Ahom Martyrs of the Historic Battle of Alaboi.

Pankaj Nath, Assam: The 357th martyrdom anniversary of the brave Ahom warriors who laid down their lives during the historic Battle of Alaboi was observed with due solemnity on Wednesday as Alaboi Ron Smriti Divas at Amingaon, Kamrup, Assam . The programme was organised by the Directorate of Archaeology, Assam, in collaboration with the Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department, Kamrup District Administration, and the Saraighat Journalists’ Forum. The programme commenced with the offering of floral tributes and the lighting of ceremonial lamps at the Alaboi Ron Smriti Soudh, located in front of the Office of the District Commissioner, Kamrup, in memory of the brave Ahom soldiers who laid down their lives while defending the motherland during the historic Battle of Alaboi on August 5, 1669. Prakash Chandra Das, MLA, Hajo–Sualkuchi, expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister of Assam for bringing the Battle of Alaboi and the sacrifices of the Ahom martyrs into greater public focus.

He also appreciated the efforts of former District Commissioner, Kamrup, and former Senior Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, Dr. Partha Sarathi Mahanta, in developing the Alaboi Ron Smriti Khetra as a permanent memorial. Diganta Kalita, MLA, Kamalpur, emphasised the importance of educating the younger generation about the glorious history of the Battle of Alaboi and the unparalleled sacrifice of the Ahom martyrs. He observed that the district-level observance of Alaboi Ron Smriti Divas has gained momentum through the visionary initiative of the Chief Minister of Assam and the sustained efforts of the Saraighat Journalists’ Forum in preserving and promoting this significant chapter of Assam’s history. Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Nabajit Deori, Director-in-Charge, Directorate of Archaeology, Assam, highlighted the historical significance of the Battle of Alaboi and emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting Assam’s rich historical heritage for future generations. In his address, Deba Kumar Mishra, District Commissioner, Kamrup, paid rich tributes to the Ahom martyrs and described the Battle of Alaboi as one of the defining chapters in Assam’s history.

He stressed that the courage, patriotism and supreme sacrifice of the Ahom warriors should continue to inspire the younger generation and underscored the need to preserve and promote this glorious legacy. Speaking on the occasion, Madhusudhan Medhi, Secretary, Saraighat Journalists’ Forum, recalled the Forum’s sustained efforts towards the establishment and development of the Alaboi Ron Smriti Khetra and the preservation of the memory of the historic battle. Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Nityananda Kalita elaborated on the historical significance of the Battle of Alaboi and traced Assam’s prolonged resistance against external invasions from 1206 to 1681. He also highlighted the crucial role played by undivided Kamrup in resisting invading forces and explained the enduring relevance of the battle in Assam’s history. The programme was attended by Subhashish Baruah, Senior Superintendent of Police, Kamrup; Hemashri Hazarika, Additional Secretary to the Government of Assam, Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department; Siddhartha Goswami, Chief Executive Officer, Kamrup Zila Parishad; Shri Susanta Kumar Dutta, District Development Commissioner, Kamrup; Bikram Chetri, Geetashri Lachit, and Biswajit Saikia, Additional District Commissioners; besides officials of the Directorate of Archaeology, the Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department, members of the Saraighat Journalists’ Forum, officials of the District Administration and a large gathering of citizens.
