NEW DELHI: The Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday paid tribute to former Delhi Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana on his birth anniversary, remembering his political legacy, commitment to public service and adherence to principles.
Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra led the floral tributes at the party office in the presence of Khurana’s wife, Raj Khurana, and several senior party leaders and workers. Those present garlanded his portrait and recalled his contributions to Delhi’s political landscape.
Describing Khurana as an embodiment of political values, Malhotra said the former chief minister had demonstrated that character and principles mattered more than public office.
Recalling the Jain Hawala case in 1995, Malhotra said Khurana resigned as Delhi chief minister without delay after his name surfaced in the case. According to the Delhi BJP chief, the decision reflected his belief that personal integrity must take precedence over political position.
Malhotra also recalled Khurana’s popular identity as the ‘Lion of Delhi’, citing his advocacy for Delhi’s statehood and his efforts to secure basic civic amenities for residents.
He said Khurana commanded respect even among political opponents because of his forthrightness and principled approach. “When he criticised, it was on principles, and when he respected someone, it came from the heart,” Malhotra said.
The Delhi BJP president called upon party workers to draw inspiration from Khurana’s life and carry forward his politics of sacrifice, dedication and putting the nation first.
Senior leaders O. P. Babbar, Mool Chand Chawla and Ved Vyas Mahajan, along with state office-bearers Vishnu Mittal, Rajesh Bhatia, Ranjeet Kashyap, Santosh Ojha, Santosh Pal, Kailash Jain and Amit Gupta, attended the programme. Khurana’s family members Shivam Chhabra and Sanyam Chhabra were also present.
The gathering concluded with party leaders reaffirming their commitment to public service, citing Khurana’s life and legacy as an inspiration.
