New Delhi (India): Delhi is set for a major urban makeover as the Delhi government moves to transform neglected spaces under flyovers and along major roads into clean, green, safe and attractive public areas through the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
In the presence of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Public Works Department (PWD) on Monday signed MoUs with two private organisations for projects focusing on cleanliness, greenery, beautification, safety, pedestrian movement and environmental awareness. PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh and senior officials were also present.
2.5-km Flyover Stretch to Get a Green Makeover
Under an initiative involving Dixon Technologies and Vrikshit Foundation, the 2.5-km stretch beneath the flyover from Deepali to Mangolpuri Market will be developed as clean, green and safe community space.
The project will include fencing along the stretch and environment-friendly mural artwork on 61 flyover pillars. Covering around 5,100 square metres, the murals will highlight environmental themes and clean energy.
Local plant species, grass, shrubs and flowering plants will also be used to create organised green spaces.
Mathura Road, MP Road Green Belts to Be Revamped
As part of a CSR initiative, the Kanodia Group will develop and maintain around two acres of green belt along Mathura Road and MP Road.
The areas currently face challenges including garbage dumping, unauthorised slums, roadside encroachments and unplanned use. The proposed makeover will introduce landscaped green spaces, trees, shrubs, flowering plants, walkways, lighting and improved maintenance.
‘Better Use of Existing Urban Spaces’
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said creating a clean, green and beautiful Delhi was a collective responsibility involving the government, society and private sector.
She said the government was promoting PPPs to convert neglected urban spaces into safer, more attractive and environment-friendly areas. The focus, she added, was not only on creating new infrastructure but also on improving citizens’ quality of life by making better use of existing spaces.
According to the Chief Minister, the projects would enhance the appearance of major city corridors, increase greenery, improve cleanliness and create better public spaces, while private-sector CSR participation would strengthen long-term maintenance.
PWD Minister Backs ‘Clean, Beautiful and Green Delhi’ Vision
PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the Delhi government was working continuously to make the capital cleaner and more beautiful in line with the Chief Minister’s vision.
He said directions had been issued from the outset to properly beautify and develop areas around flyovers and along major roads. He thanked the partner organisations for taking responsibility for the initiative and said their participation would provide further momentum to the government’s efforts.
The Minister said such government-private sector partnerships would be encouraged as examples of public participation, expressing confidence that they would help accelerate Delhi’s drive towards becoming cleaner, greener and more beautiful.
