Amritsar: Punjab Police have busted an alleged illegal arms-smuggling network with the arrest of two men and the recovery of 10 sophisticated pistols, magazines and 10 live cartridges in Amritsar, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Sunday.
The arrested accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, son of Iqbal Singh, and Gurpreet Singh, son of Gulzar Singh, both residents of Hawellian village in Tarn Taran. The recovered weapons comprise nine 9mm pistols and one .30-bore pistol. Police also seized a grey Bajaj Platina motorcycle allegedly used to transport the arms consignments.
According to DGP Yadav, preliminary investigation indicates that the accused were allegedly in contact with a foreign-based handler and were receiving illegal arms consignments from across the border for onward supply to other parties in Punjab.
Acting on a specific intelligence input, Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar teams learned that the two suspects had allegedly received a large weapons consignment through a drone near Hawellian village, close to the Indo-Pak border fencing, on the instructions of their foreign-based handler.
Police subsequently intercepted both suspects near Khasa village on the Amritsar–Attari GT Road and recovered the weapons, magazines and live cartridges from their possession.
DGP Yadav said the investigation is continuing to establish the forward and backward linkages of the case, identify other accomplices and uncover the wider cross-border arms-smuggling network.
A case, FIR No. 51 dated August 22, 2026, has been registered at Police Station State Special Operation Cell, Amritsar, under Sections 25, 25(1)(A) and 25(8) of the Arms Act and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The action comes as Punjab Police continue their drive, under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, to strengthen security and curb organised criminal and illegal arms networks in the state.
