New Delhi: A special programme commemorating the horrors of Partition was organised at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre on Thursday, bringing alive the pain, displacement and human stories associated with the Partition of India in 1947.

Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra paid tribute to the victims of Partition and honoured the courage and sacrifices of those who endured the upheaval.

Titled “Partition Horrors – Remembrance Day”, the programme used music, theatre and video to portray the experiences, memories and stories of separation from one of the most traumatic chapters in India’s history.

Addressing the gathering, Kapil Mishra said the programme was an effort to bring the human stories of Partition before the present generation and highlight the suffering and struggles behind the tragedy.

Mishra said the “horrors of Partition” had been suppressed for years and that efforts were made to make people forget the experiences of those who suffered. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country had ensured that the pain, sacrifices and lessons of 1947 remained part of public memory.

He described Partition Horrors Remembrance Day as not merely an occasion to pay tribute to millions who suffered, but also an opportunity to learn from history and pass its lessons to future generations.

“When a society forgets its history, sacrifices and the lessons learnt from them, its future stands on a weak foundation,” Mishra said, stressing the need to preserve the memory of Partition as India moves towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

He further said, “We will never allow the mindset that weakens India’s unity, integrity and social harmony to flourish again.”

A key highlight of the programme was a special musical presentation, ‘Stories of Separation’, by Sonam Kalra and her team. Through music and artistic expression, the performance portrayed stories of separation, struggle and memories connected with the Partition of 1947.

Mishra expressed gratitude to the Union Ministry of Culture and the participating artists for organising the programme and helping bring the human dimension of Partition before contemporary audiences.

The event served as a solemn reminder of the immense human cost of Partition while underlining the importance of remembering history, honouring those who suffered and drawing lessons for the future.
