Chandigarh/Amritsar: Punjab Police has foiled a major cross-border terror conspiracy with the arrest of a 24-year-old suspect allegedly linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), recovering a hand grenade, a 9mm Glock pistol and four live cartridges in Amritsar.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations indicate that the accused, identified as Sumit Kumar alias Pandit, was in contact with cross-border ISI handlers through Instagram and had allegedly been instructed to target police establishments and public places to disrupt peace and public order.
Police said the accused, a native of Rupnagar currently residing in Amritsar, was initially apprehended with the Glock pistol and ammunition. During sustained interrogation, investigators recovered a hand grenade based on his disclosure, thwarting what officials described as a larger terror conspiracy.
Commissioner of Police (Amritsar) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs and technical surveillance. He added that verification of the accused’s background revealed he is already facing a case under the NDPS Act.
Police have also impounded the accused’s motorcycle and launched further investigations to identify other associates and cross-border handlers allegedly linked to the conspiracy.
A case has been registered at Police Station Cantonment, Amritsar, under relevant provisions of the Arms Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the Explosive Act.
