Pakistan inducted its first Hangor-class submarine at a ceremony in Sanya attended by President Asif Ali Zardari. The commissioning advances Islamabad’s eight-submarine deal with China.

Pakistan has officially inducted its first Hangor-class submarine into the navy, marking a big step in its long-term push to upgrade maritime capabilities. The submarine is a part of an agreement between Pakistan and China, under which Islamabad is set to acquire eight Hangor-class vessels.

The submarines are believed to be based on China’s Type 039A design and are equipped with modern weaponry, including torpedoes and anti-ship missiles. They also feature air-independent propulsion, allowing them to remain submerged for longer periods, thereby enhancing stealth and operational reach.

The commissioning ceremony took place in the Chinese port city of Sanya, where Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari was the chief guest. Senior officials from both Pakistan and China were present at the event. In recent years, Asif Ali Zardari and other Pakistani officials have also visited China many times.

PAK-CHINA DEFENCE TIES GAIN PACE

In an official statement, Pakistan’s military described the commissioning as a continuation of strong bilateral ties. “The commissioning of the first Hangor-class submarine marks another chapter in the time-tested and enriching friendship between Pakistan and China,” it said, as quoted by Associated Press.

Asif Ali Zardari called the development a “historic milestone” for the navy. He said it demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a “robust, balanced and credible defence posture”. He added that Pakistan remains capable of defending its sovereignty, protecting maritime interests and securing economic lifelines.

Meanwhile, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf pointed to increasing risks at key shipping choke points that could disrupt global trade and energy flows. He said, “The Hangor-class submarines, equipped with advanced sensors, weapons and air-independent propulsion systems, would help preserve stability in the region and secure vital sea lanes across the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean.”

The name “Hangor” carries historical weight for Pakistan’s navy. It refers to a submarine credited with sinking the Indian warship INS Khukri during the 1971 conflict — which Islamabad claims is a defining moment in its naval warfare history.

Pakistan has, for years, depended on its submarine fleet as a part of its defence strategy, especially given its long-standing tensions with neighboring nations.
