China steps in to mediate as Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions escalate after Kabul airstrikes, with rising civilian casualty claims and fears of a wider regional conflict intensifying.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated sharply following a fresh round of airstrikes in Kabul, raising fears of a wider regional conflict and prompting urgent diplomatic intervention by China.

Pakistan said it carried out the strikes under “Operation Ghazab Lil Haq,” targeting what it described as militant infrastructure. However, the Afghan Taliban have strongly contested this version, claiming that the strikes hit a drug rehabilitation hospital, with reports suggesting up to 400 people may have been killed. Islamabad has firmly denied these allegations, insisting that no civilian facilities were targeted.

The latest escalation is rooted in long-standing tensions between the two neighbours. Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban-led government in Kabul of providing a haven and logistical support to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant group responsible for a surge in deadly attacks within Pakistan. The Taliban authorities have consistently denied these accusations, calling them baseless.

Compounding the situation is the decades-old dispute over the Durand Line, a contentious border that has remained a flashpoint between the two countries. Periodic cross-border strikes and retaliatory actions have intensified friction, particularly in recent months.

Amid growing instability, China has stepped up its diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has held talks with officials from both Islamabad and Kabul, urging restraint, an immediate ceasefire, and direct dialogue. Beijing has also deployed its special envoy, who has been shuttling between the two capitals in an attempt to broker peace.

China’s involvement is driven by significant strategic interests. Beijing has invested more than $65 billion in Pakistan under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of its Belt and Road Initiative. Continued instability along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border threatens key infrastructure and transit routes that are central to China’s regional connectivity ambitions.

Security concerns are also a major factor. China fears that prolonged conflict could create space for extremist groups, including those that may pose a threat to its own western regions, to expand their operations. Additionally, Afghanistan’s vast untapped mineral wealth, estimated to be worth over $1 trillion, represents a major economic opportunity for Beijing, further increasing the importance of regional stability.

Despite diplomatic outreach, including calls from Chinese President Xi Jinping for restraint, the situation remains volatile. The timing of the latest strikes, coming shortly after high-level mediation efforts, suggests that nationalist and security imperatives on both sides may be outpacing diplomatic progress.

As tensions continue to simmer, the risk of further escalation looms large. Whether China’s mediation can succeed in bringing both sides back to the negotiating table remains uncertain, but the stakes for regional stability and global strategic interests are higher than ever.
