At least three people were killed and dozens injured after a massive fire ripped through a shopping mall in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi on Friday, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
According to officials, the blaze broke out at Gul Plaza in the MA Jinnah Road area, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky that were visible from miles away. Videos from the scene showed firefighters battling the inferno as flames engulfed parts of the multi-storey complex.
Officials said multiple fire tenders were deployed and the operation to control the blaze and search the premises was still underway. Local residents described panic as smoke spread rapidly through the mall, forcing people to flee.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Authorities have launched an investigation to establish what triggered the blaze and assess the extent of the damage.
