Jalandhar: Punjab Police has arrested Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra after an internal investigation allegedly found his involvement in extortion and acceptance of ₹16 lakh as illegal gratification from a US-based family, according to the Office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jalandhar Range.

The officer was initially relieved of his duties as Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda Police Station and transferred to Police Lines, Hoshiarpur, following media reports concerning allegations linked to a US indictment in an extortion case associated with a murder investigation. The murder probe was subsequently handed over to an IPS officer posted outside Hoshiarpur district.

Police said the investigation, based on technical analysis, financial trails, witness statements and other corroborative evidence, established sufficient material linking the inspector to alleged demands for extortion and illegal gratification. Investigators claim the officer accepted ₹16 lakh from the US-based family.

Following the collection of evidence, Inspector Nagra was named as an accused in FIR No. 20 dated January 16, 2026, registered at Tanda Police Station under Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He was arrested on July 17 and is being produced before the jurisdictional court, where police will seek remand for further investigation into the alleged conspiracy.

The Punjab Police has also placed the inspector under suspension and initiated departmental proceedings. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing, with additional evidence being gathered.

The action, the police stated, reflects the Punjab Government’s policy of zero tolerance towards corruption and official misconduct.
