Kanpur: A Thai woman who travelled to Kanpur in search of the man she considered her husband has accused a local leather businessman of concealing his existing marriage and allegedly taking nearly ₹60 lakh from her, according to her complaint.

The woman, identified in reports as Upsorn, told police that she met Kanpur-based businessman Mohammad Irfan through social media around four years ago. She alleged that Irfan claimed to be unmarried and that the two subsequently married in Thailand.
According to her complaint, Upsorn later transferred nearly ₹60 lakh to Irfan in several transactions to meet business and other financial requirements. She claimed that the money came from her earnings from a restaurant and canteen, as well as loans taken from relatives.
The woman alleged that Irfan subsequently stopped communicating with her, prompting her to travel to Kanpur to find him. When she reached his residence on October 6, she claimed to have discovered that he was already married and had three children.
Upsorn has further alleged that when she sought the return of her money, she was assaulted and pressured to convert to Islam and wear a burqa. These allegations have not yet been independently established and are subject to police investigation.
Kanpur Police have arrested Irfan and registered a first information report (FIR) in connection with the complaint. Investigators are examining the alleged marriage documents, financial transactions and other claims made by the woman.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged marriage, the transfer of money and the accusations levelled against the businessman.
