New Delhi: The Press Club of India has expressed shock and dismay over the Delhi Police’s action against and treatment of journalists during protests at Jantar Mantar against the Chief Election Commissioner on Friday and Saturday.

The Press Club said such behaviour cannot be normalised in a democracy and stressed that journalists must be allowed to work freely and without fear while documenting people who gather to raise various issues.
It said that restrictions on journalists’ work even at the heart of the national capital “does not bode well” for the trajectory of media freedom in India.
The Press Club also urged the Delhi Police to immediately act on a female journalist’s complaint and ensure that mediapersons are provided the necessary space to perform their professional duties without facing aggression or threats.
