Islamabad: Pakistan has intensified security measures in the capital ahead of the proposed 27 September march by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), with the administration imposing restrictions on public gatherings, rallies, processions and demonstrations for two months.

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been enforced across Islamabad, including high-security areas, prohibiting gatherings of five or more people as well as rallies, processions and protests.

According to an order issued on 18 September by Additional District Magistrate Anam Fatima, the restrictions took immediate effect and will remain in force for two months. The administration also cited provisions of the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, 2024, under which public gatherings have been restricted. Violations may invite legal action.

The restrictions come as PTI prepares for its proposed march on 27 September. The party has been demanding the release of its founder, Imran Khan, who has remained in prison since 2023 in connection with various cases. PTI leaders have said the planned demonstration will also highlight the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said on Monday that the party would announce its detailed protest plan on 25 September and mobilise supporters from across Pakistan.

Authorities have also sought the deployment of Rangers in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali to assist the police in maintaining law and order. Officials have requested restrictions on mobile and internet services in parts of Rawalpindi and Attock on 27 September. Security arrangements are also being strengthened to prevent protesters from entering Islamabad.

The Islamabad High Court, in an order issued on 14 September, stated that no political party or public office-holder could block roads in the capital. The court also held that government employees and public resources could not be used for political demonstrations.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has separately urged PTI leaders to reconsider the proposed march.

Meanwhile, the Kisan Ittehad farmers’ organisation has also announced a march towards Islamabad over a range of demands, including relief from rising agricultural costs.
