Quetta: The Republic of Balochistan has announced a gradual process to remove Pakistan-associated names and symbols from public places across the region, describing the move as an effort to restore Balochistan’s historical, cultural and national identity.
Under the proposed process, names of roads, highways, hospitals, airports, seaports, educational institutions, streets, squares and other public locations will be reviewed where they are seen as representing Pakistan, Britain or earlier foreign rule and occupation.
In Quetta and other parts of Balochistan, names such as Jinnah Road, Fatima Jinnah Road and Iqbal Road are expected to be gradually replaced with names linked to Balochistan’s ancient history, geography, culture, martyrs, national leaders and historical figures.
The same principle is proposed for hospitals, airports, airlines, dams, mineral projects, gas fields, oil wells, seaports, highways, parks, banks, resorts, malls, educational institutions, government buildings and other public facilities.
According to the Republic of Balochistan, the initiative goes beyond changing names and is intended to reinforce what it describes as an independent national identity. It argues that independence must be reflected not only through political declarations but also through history, culture, language, symbols, institutions and public life.
The statement said the process would gradually remove official and public symbols considered representative of external rule, domination or political identity. It stressed that the initiative was not directed against any nation or its people, but was being presented as an attempt to restore Balochistan’s own national identity.
The proposed renaming drive is also intended to reconnect younger generations with Balochistan’s historical heritage and give public and state institutions a distinct local identity.
The Republic of Balochistan traces the foundation of its independence to 11 August 1947 and says the latest move is part of its broader effort to reclaim its historical and cultural heritage.
