Pankaj Nath, Assam, 1 August: Hrishikesh Fhukon, a fifth‑grade student from Bordoloi town in Tinsukia district, Assam has brought honour to his district by building a sensor‑based smart dustbin that operates without touch and automatically separates wet and dry waste. Hrishikesh studies at Saint Stephen Higher Secondary School. The device uses proximity sensors to open the lid as someone approaches, eliminating the need to touch the bin. Inside, a simple sensor‑controlled separation mechanism routes wet waste into one compartment and dry waste into another. The design reduces direct contact, lowers the risk of infection, and makes waste management cleaner, more hygienic, and environmentally friendlier.Teachers say Hrishikesh shows deep interest in science and strong creative ability. He completed the project using materials available at home with guidance from school teachers. The school administration has praised his innovation and called it an inspiration for other students. Hrishikesh’s mother is Dimpi Fhukon, and his family is proud of his achievement.

On the basis of this innovation, Hrishikesh has applied for the Prime Minister’s National Child Award—2026 in the Science and Technology (Innovation) category. If selected, his recognition would be a notable honour for Tinsukia district. Local residents and school officials welcomed the invention and noted that low‑cost, practical solutions like this can strengthen waste‑management and cleanliness drives in both rural and urban areas. Experts observe that school‑level projects foster problem‑solving skills and technical thinking among children, which can produce long‑term benefits for communities. Hrishikesh’s work demonstrates that age is not a barrier to meaningful innovation. With curiosity, determination, and appropriate mentorship, young students can develop solutions that support public health and environmental protection. The school and community have conveyed best wishes for his future and hope his project will be adopted locally to improve sanitation and waste segregation.
