Pankaj Nath, Assam: On the occasion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2026, an awareness programme was organised today by Sankalp: District Hub for Empowerment of Women, under the Women & Child Development Department, Assam, at the Conference Hall of the Integrated District Commissioner’s Office, Kamrup, Assam . Addressing the gathering, the District Commissioner, Kamrup, Deba Kumar Mishra highlighted the possible causes of human trafficking and witch-hunting.
Stressing the need for preventive measures, he called upon all stakeholders to identify trafficking prone and vulnerable areas, intensify awareness campaigns and promote education as an effective tool to combat these social evils. He expressed hope that every department and individual would work collectively towards the mission of eliminating trafficking and protecting vulnerable communities. A presentation on Mission Shakti was delivered, highlighting its objectives and various sub-schemes aimed at the empowerment, protection, and welfare of women. Haripriya Rajbongshi, Advocate, Gauhati High Court, delivered an insightful presentation on the State Policy on Combating Human Trafficking and Ending Witch-Hunting.
She elaborated on the existing challenges, legal provisions and the way forward for strengthening institutional mechanisms and enhancing community participation in addressing these issues. DSP Tinkujyoti Choudhury spoke about the initiatives undertaken by the police to prevent human trafficking and explained the role of the Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) in rescue operations, investigation, rehabilitation and inter-agency coordination. He also discussed measures to further strengthen anti-trafficking efforts through collaborative planning and timely intervention. The Assistant LADC stated that the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has been regularly organising awareness programmes on human trafficking and related issues.
He further assured that the DLSA remains readily available to provide legal assistance and support to those in need. An open discussion session followed, during which participants shared their views and discussed measures to strengthen coordinated efforts against human trafficking and related social issues. Participants were informed that Child Helpline 1098 is available for reporting any issue concerning a child and were urged to promptly report cases requiring assistance, care or protection. The programme was attended by Chief Executive Officer, Zila Parishad Siddhartha Goswami; ADC Geetashri Lachit; Chief LADC; In charge DSWO; CDPOs and representatives from various concerned departments.
