Amritsar: In a major crackdown on a cross-border narcotics network, Punjab Police’s State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) in Amritsar has arrested two alleged smugglers and seized 64.62 kg of heroin, while also impounding a Maruti Swift car used in the operation.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the module has links to notorious Pakistan-based smuggler Moosa and a Portugal-based handler, indicating an international dimension to the smuggling racket. Preliminary investigations suggest the accused had retrieved the heroin consignment, allegedly delivered by drone from across the border, and were en route to deliver it onward when they were intercepted near Mahal Bypass in Amritsar.
The arrested men have been identified as Sarwan Singh alias Gujjar and Shamsher Singh alias Shera, both residents of Amritsar district. Police said the two had allegedly been promised huge financial rewards by their handlers.
According to AIG SSOC Amritsar Sukhminder Singh Mann, the arrests followed specific intelligence inputs, leading to a swift interception by the Counter Intelligence wing. Investigators are now probing forward and backward linkages to uncover the full extent of the trafficking network.
Police have registered a case under provisions of the NDPS Act and the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam at Police Station SSOC Amritsar. Further arrests and recoveries are expected as the investigation progresses.
