Chandigarh: In a significant move to modernise policing, the Punjab Government has collaborated with Indian Institute of Technology Ropar to strengthen artificial intelligence-driven crime control and streamline access to criminal data.

Under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the partnership will focus on developing a ‘structured data system’ aimed at enhancing crime identification and prevention. The initiative will bolster ongoing anti-crime drives such as ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ and ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’.

As part of the collaboration, IIT Ropar will design advanced software equipped with features including data analytics, voice recognition, and dashboard-based monitoring. These tools are expected to enable real-time tracking and support intelligence-led policing across the state.

A key component of the project involves creating a unified database of criminals by integrating both structured and unstructured data. Existing records, including scanned documents and handwritten reports, will be digitised and consolidated into a single platform—allowing officers to retrieve detailed information with just a ‘one click’.

The Bhagwant Mann-led government has also ensured specialised technical support for tracking and analysis. By leveraging AI tools, predictive models, and analytical dashboards, the system aims to transform fragmented data into actionable intelligence, thereby improving the speed and accuracy of investigations.

Officials noted that while structured data is easier to process, a large volume of police records remains in unstructured formats, often hindering efficiency. The new system is expected to bridge this gap by integrating all forms of data into a cohesive framework.

The Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit (DITSU), based at AIMS Mohali, will coordinate among stakeholders and support the state’s anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’.

Senior Punjab Police officials said the collaboration would enhance AI and machine learning capabilities within the force, enabling better crime pattern recognition and strengthening efforts under ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’, while also curbing the misuse of technology by criminal networks.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve crime detection, enhance monitoring of criminal networks, and enable faster, data-driven policing—ultimately boosting public safety across Punjab.
