Life Imprisonment Imposed on Pakistan’s 11th Army Chief

In a dramatic and unprecedented ruling, the Supreme Tribunal of the Republic of Balochistan has sentenced Pakistan’s 11th Chief of Army Staff, Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah, to life imprisonment for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and large-scale violations of international law inside Balochistan.

The verdict, delivered unanimously on 20 February 2026 in Case No. RBT-02/2026, declares the Pakistan Army leadership guilty on all counts following a two-year investigation.

Chief Justice Abdul Kareem Baloch, speaking on behalf of the full bench, stated that the “maximum prescribed penalty” was necessary given the gravity and scale of the crimes.


Tribunal Declares Overwhelming Evidence of Systematic Crimes

According to the judgment, the prosecution presented:

  • 100+ witness depositions
  • Documentary and military records
  • Survivor testimonies
  • Financial tracing of alleged resource exploitation

The Tribunal ruled that the acts were widespread, systematic, and directed against civilians, meeting the threshold for crimes against humanity and war crimes under international humanitarian law.


Charges That Rocked the Court

The 20-page charge sheet accused the Pakistan Army chief of:

• Systematic Military Incursions

Unauthorized garrisons, heavy weapon deployment, and refusal to withdraw forces from Baloch territory.

• Targeting of Civilians

Aerial bombardments of villages, schools, and marketplaces.

• Enforced Disappearances

Over 40,000 documented missing persons cases cited by investigators.

• Torture & Sexual Violence

The Tribunal found evidence of systematic abuse in detention centers.

• Economic Pillage

Illegal extraction of gold, copper, coal, and rare earth minerals without sovereign authorization.

• Environmental Destruction

Groundwater contamination, biodiversity damage, and demolition of villages for resource corridors.


Command Responsibility Established

The ruling emphasized the doctrine of command responsibility, concluding that the Army Chief exercised authority over operations and failed to prevent or punish alleged crimes.

The Tribunal declared the evidence met the standard of “beyond reasonable doubt.”

A Verdict with Regional Impact

The Tribunal stated the ruling represents “accountability, not vengeance,” asserting sovereignty and warning that further legal steps will follow against alleged facilitators.

This landmark judgment marks one of the most severe legal condemnations ever issued against a sitting Pakistan Army Chief and is expected to trigger sharp international reactions.
