Vadodara-based Fashion Designer Receives Death Threats After Yoga Incident at Golden Temple

India (Page 3 News Worldwide): Vadodara-based Fashion Designer Receives Death Threats After Yoga Incident at Golden Temple; Provided Police Protection

Vadodara-based fashion designer, Archana Makwana, found herself at the center of controversy following her yoga session at Amritsar’s Golden Temple on June 21. The incident, where she performed the ‘Shirshasan’ pose to commemorate International Yoga Day, quickly went viral on social media, attracting a wave of criticism, abuse, and even death threats towards Makwana.

In response to the threats, local authorities have stepped in to ensure Makwana’s safety. The Punjab police have taken action by registering a case against her under section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code, citing intentional outrage of religious sentiments as the reason. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee filed the complaint leading to this legal action.

Makwana, known not only for her fashion designs but also as a social media influencer, has since expressed remorse for any offense caused, emphasizing that her intention was never to disrespect anyone’s religious beliefs. She swiftly removed the controversial photos from her social media accounts and posted a video apology, clarifying that her yoga practice at the revered site was meant to promote unity and physical well-being.

In light of the escalating situation, Vadodara police have taken proactive measures to safeguard Makwana. She has been granted police protection at the local level for an initial week, starting from Sunday, with the possibility of extension based on the circumstances. The authorities are keen to ensure her safety and prevent any untoward incidents in the wake of the threats she has received.

This incident serves as a reminder of the power of social media and the importance of being mindful of cultural sensitivities, especially when sharing content related to sacred places. Makwana’s experience highlights the need for respectful engagement and thoughtful consideration in all forms of expression, both online and offline.
