Thai FDA orders recall of 15 children’s syrups from the market

The Thai Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has recalled 15 types of children’s syrup from drug store shelves after finding them to contain inappropriate levels of ethylene glycol.

According to TFDA Secretary-General Dr. Narong Aphikulvanich, the Medical Sciences Department tested samples of the 15 types of syrup and found that the ethylene glycol content exceeded permitted levels level.

He said the TFDA has ordered the manufacturers to recall all 31 production lots of the 15 syrups immediately.

He advised parents of children who develop nausea, vomiting or stomach after consuming any of the 15 products to consulta doctor.

The 15 products being recalled are Carbosol syrup, Startec syrup, Parastar suspension, Fatec syrup, Cetaphen syrup, Co-trimoxazole mixture, Kressbuten suspension, Domperstar suspension, Kresstrim suspension, Kresscolet syrup, Kresstec syrup, Kressbrooxol syrup, Startifen syrup and Domperkress syrup.

Ethylene glycol is an organic compound. It is mainly used as a raw material in the manufacture of polyester fibres and inanti-freeze formulations. It is odourless, colourless, flammable and has a sweet taste, but is toxic in high concentrations.
